About Project GO

The U.S. military needs future military officers who possess the necessary critical language and cross-cultural communication skills required for effective leadership in the 21st-century operational environment. Project GO is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education.

As part of the Project GO Program, the University of Maryland will offer innovative, intensive domestic and overseas language instruction to ROTC students from a nationwide audience with the goal of helping students to reach an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) 1 proficiency level in Arabic or Persian.  Accepted students receive full scholarships for participation in these programs.

Project GO students studying with UMD will have access to a wide variety of resources to support their studies during the year or summer, including an Arabic library with over 1,000 books, hundreds of in-language films for both Arabic and Persian, 24-hour student lounges with access to Persian and Arabic media, and an engaged and supportive learning community.  Students who will take part in our summer overseas program will benefit from pre-and post-program online resources, activities, and virtual language partners via an individualized student portal.
